20,000 Star Wars LEGOs play John Williams’ theme music

If ever there was a recipe for a viral video, it’s creativity mixed with music and some Star Wars seasoning — and maybe a little Star Wars dancing for good measure. The latest example of the Star Wars music viral formula is one of the most impressive: 20,000 LEGOs displaying scenes from the films, while also playing the music.

The LEGOs are arranged on what’s called a barrel organ — a kind of pipe organ that contains a rotating barrel intricately adorned with pins; the organ’s mechanical insides read the pins to play the right notes. When this Star Wars barrel is rolled, the John Williams’ Star Wars theme is played.

The LEGOs act as the pins, but they’re also arranged to visually display several scenes from the movies. This is all the more impressive given that barrel organs notation is apparently extremely challenging to get right even if you’re not trying to paint a picture with the pins.
