Sid Meier’s Pirates! for iPhone docks at the App Store

Legendary game designer Sid Meier is probably best known for the classic strategy game Civilization,  but no less classic is Sid Meier’s Pirates!, a swashbuckling adventure game that challenges you with building a crew of conniving, thieving pirates and plundering the Caribbean. Now you can play it on your iPhone; the 3D version of the game hit the Apple App Store today.

The iPhone version costs $2.99 and is very similar to the port made for the iPad last year. Both iOS games are based on the 2004 re-imagined, 3D reboot of the 1987 concept. Both the 1987 and 2004 versions started on the PC first and made their way to consoles afterwards.

The game’s 2004 graphics haven’t aged well on larger screens, but they fit perfectly on a phone. More important is the free-roaming gameplay, which incorporates sword fighting, ship-to-ship combat, treasure hunting, trading, and even dancing to woo the ladies of the Caribbean.

The game was also recently made available for Windows Phone 7 owners.
