YouTube just revealed a human rights channel full of streaming videos intended to raise awareness of and empower individuals to act in response to human rights abuses all over the world.
The endeavor is spearheaded by the social news team at Storyful and Witness, an activist video network. The content of the channel is a mix of user-generated content that sheds light on issues people are facing around the world and videos created by nonprofit organizations.
Storyful will seed the channel with videos (the channel is carefully curated, not a random hodgepodge) while Witness ensures that it represents the breadth of issues people are facing accurately.
Channels like this and websites like the social activism network Change.org are really changing the way people are raising awareness and money for social causes. Digital and viral entertainment isn’t all about funny cat videos and Star Wars LEGOs, it seems.
