Breaking Bad season 5 hits iTunes July 15, pre-orders start now

AMC’s critically acclaimed drama Breaking Bad will premiere its fifth season on Sunday, July 15 and Apple just opened up iTunes pre-orders for a season pass on downloads, claiming that the show will hit the store that very same day.  For non-Apple fans, the series will hit Amazon Instant Video a few days later on July 18.

It’s unusual for Apple to claim that an episode will hit the day that it airs; there’s usually a 24-hour delay before the downloads appear on iTunes. You can bet the first episode won’t show up on iTunes before it actually airs on AMC, but it’s possible Apple will release it a couple hours after the premiere. But don’t be surprised if you have to wait until the next morning, either; we’re skeptical of the claim.

Either way, the show is coming to iTunes and you can pre-order it now!

Breaking Bad is a crime drama about Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher who turns to dealing meth to pay his medical expenses and support his family after he is diagnosed with lung cancer. Showrunner Vince Gilligan’s aim for the show is to depict a truly evolving character who changes from Mr. Chips into Scarface over the course of the series.

AMC has also made inroads with critics with its other two prominent original series, Mad Men and The Walking Dead. The network’s clearly angling to become the basic cable equivalent of HBO. The iTunes season pass pre-order costs $21.99, and episodes will likely run $2.99 individually.

Hey Samuel… the link you show is to a fake Season 5 video.

So I have a question, as I have never used a season pass before.  Essentially the $21.99 buys me the entire season?  Or that buys me the right to get the season downloaded the same day?  Basically, will I get to watch the whole season for only $21.99 or $21.99 + $2.99 per episode =  $60.86 for 13 episodes.  Wanting to get rid of satellite because I rarely watch it and only have 3 shows that I need to keep up on, so doing the season pass thing for those shows would save me $825+ per year on monthly satellite fees!

      Hey Hake,

Yep, the $21.99 buys you the entire season; you don’t have to buy episodes in the season after that, they are yours. Typically this means the episodes will be available the day after air, although Apple advertised that at least the first one would be on the same day — we wouldn’t count on them fulfilling that promise though.

And yeah, totally, dropping satellite when you only watch 3 shows is a smart call, especially with all this hooplah about DishNetwork dropping AMC.If you’re ever looking for more news and stuff about cutting the cable/satellite cord and finding cool entertainment online, be sure and come back to The Interactive, it’s what we’re all about — or follow us on Twitter or Facebook. Just to be clear, i will be able to watch the season premiere tonight?

Apple claimed so in its marketing for this, but we are skeptical because that has rarely happened before. Chances are you will have to wait until morning. That said, if you’re downloading online because you’re a DISH Network customer and thus lost AMC, you can stream the episode live online tonight — but only if you’re a DISH customer.
