New Super Mario Bros. U revives old-school platforming on Wii U

There’s a new Mario game coming to the Wii U! It’s called New Super Mario Bros. U, and it’s a multi-player affair in the side-scrolling style of the Mario classics of yore.

It’s a sequel of sorts to 2009′s New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Like its predecessor, it lets a bunch of friends (this time 5, four with Wii remotes and one with the new GamePad touchscreen controller) all rush through the zany mushroom kingdom together.

Nintendo revealed the game during its press conference at E3 2012 in Los Angeles this morning, but we mostly only had a short video to go on; not many features were specifically mentioned. We did glimpse underwater levels, a squirrel suit that lets Mario fly, and of course the rideable dinosaur Yoshi.

As with the just-announced Pikmin 3, no release date on the books just yet. It could come out alongside the console this holiday season, but it could just as easily be delayed into sometime in 2013. That said, it will definitely be a digital download like all Wii U games.
