14 years ago, PC RPG classic Baldur’s Gate defined the genre for countless successors, including Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Now it’s back and updated for the times with high-resolution graphics and fresh new content for PC, Mac, and iPad. Today, the developers of the new version of the game announced its release date: September 18, 2012.
On the PC and Mac, the game will cost $20 but that will get you all of the new content, which includes three new characters in your party, a new dungeon area called The Black Pits. The Black Pits includes a series of new quests that involve defeating enemies in an underground, arena-like setting.
The story is a little different on the iPad. The iPad version — which has an interface specially designed for the touch screen — will sell for $10 in the Apple App Store, but two of the additional characters will be in-app purchases at an as-yet-undisclosed price point. The Black Pits will be included in the vanilla version, though.
With two months left to go, hardcore RPG fans have some time to kill before Baldur’s Gate is released. Thats why we put together a handy list of great iPad RPGs to play before Baldur’s Gate. Too bad Legend of Grimrock hasn’t hit iOS already, though!
