Netflix subscribers watched more than one billion hours of streaming video through the service in the month of June. Crunch the numbers and you’ll find that’s more than any individual cable TV network or channel reaches.
The one billion number was posted in a public Facebook status update by Netflix CEO Reed Hastings earlier today. The status update was written as a congratulations to Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s chief content officer.
BTIG Research analyst Richard Greenfield crunched the numbers in a blog post (registration required) and determined that that adds up to more viewing hours than any TV channel or network can match. Note that we’re not talking about Comcast or DISH Network — just TV networks like Spike TV, Syfy, or ESPN.
He did not, however, that “Netflix is a seasonal business,” saying that its viewership is strongest during the summer when TV networks aren’t showing as much fresh content. That probably holds true for the millions of folks who have both traditional cable TV and Netflix, but it might not if you’ve cut the cord all together.
Netflix has had quite a few recent setbacks, including the loss of the popular Starz library of movies, but it was already clear before today that those downsides haven’t slowed Netflix’s growth.
