Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog sequel is really happening

Buffy, Firefly, and The Avengers writer Joss Whedon has produced a lot of awesome entertainment, but nothing was quite so quirky as Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, a heartwarming musical about an aspiring supervillain played by How I Met Your Mother‘s Neil Patrick Harris. Just one hour of musical fun was far too short, so Whedon has confirmed that a sequel is in the works.

Speaking to Hollywood industry rag Variety in a Q&A, Whedon hopes to get the sequel in production “within the next year.” Expect to see it available through various streaming and download services just like its predecessor. Whedon calls this a “media-agnostic” approach.

In fact, when Whedon received a Streamy award (that’s sort of like an Emmy for web-only content) he described online video as “not just the new media, but the media.”

Despite those streaming roots, the first Dr. Horrible will see its network TV debut on The CW on October 9. That should expose it to new, less tech-savvy audiences and pave the way for the upcoming sequel.
