Atari classic game Pitfall gets a reboot on iPhone and iPad

It’s been 30 years since the Activision’s original Pitfall game for Atari 2600 showed up in primitive gaming homes, and to celebrate that the mega-huge game development company has released a total reboot of the game for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. It’s currently available in the Apple App Store for 99 cents.

The gameplay is very similar to that of “infinite running” games like Temple Run, but in spirit of the classic is definitely here, with homages throughout. Activision has added a leveling up system (because what game doesn’t have one of those now?) and of course an item store where you can by silly costumes and so on.

After it was released back in 1982, Pitfall became the second best-selling Atari 2600 game behind another one you might have heard of — Pac-Man. It has been revisited time and again with other adaptations and reboots. This version starts out with footage of the original game, then zooms out to show your fully 3D character playing the old Atari game on his tablet.

It’s a cute reminder of how far games have come in 30 years — especially when you consider that this more technologically superior version is running on a phone and not on your home TV set. The download link is below if you want to try it out.
