GetGlue got its start as a sort of Foursquare for television shows, allowing you to check in to whatever you were watching, share that with friends, and discuss what’s on. That’s a fun idea on its own, but the social TV app just launched a new version called GetGlue HD that also includes a new, social media-style take on the TV guide.
The app knows what shows you like to watch and discuss if you’ve already used it before, so it provides you with a list of shows currently airing on mainstream TV ranked from highest priority to least — it’s like the old TV guide magazines, but it knows what’s on right now and prioritizes based on your preferences. It also shows you if friends like a show.
That’s all well and good, of course, but if you aren’t in the habit of watching TV on, well, TV (and who is anymore?), the app still has a thing or two to offer. The listings include a searchable database of programs that are streaming on iTunes, Netflix, and Amazon — kind of like CBS-owned online video search engine Clicker.
GetGlue also shows you tweets and other social activity related to your shows. Again, it’s not quite as useful if you’re not watching live TV over cable or satellite, but there’s plenty there for you to check out even if you only stream and download. A social network for TV shows with check-ins, a searchable database of streaming content, and recommendations for new shows to look out for ought to be useful for just about anyone who watches TV on any platform.
