Canada has produced several cult-hit indie pop rock bands, but dreamy Montreal outfit Stars seems to be one of the most notable recently. The band has a new album called The North arriving in just a few days — September 4 to be precise. Can’t wait that long? NPR has a complete stream of the album as part of its First Listen series.
The album is eclectic, with musical styles varying across the 12 tracks. But there’s always a dream-pop rock vibe, with both male and female vocals covering a wide range of topics. As a whole, the album comes across as an airy, neo-late-80s trip. If that’s your thing, you should check it out before you commit to buy the album in a week.
We wouldn’t be surprised if The North ends up on Spotify and Rdio for free on launch day, though. Last year’s The Bedroom Demos is, along with most of the band’s previous library.
Here’s the track listing. Unfortunately we can’t embed the album or the tracks, but you can listen to either the entire thing or individual tracks at NPR’s website. Enjoy!
