When gamers found out cult hit, Diablo-like Torchlight was getting a greatly enhanced sequel, they were enthusiastic, but the launch of the behemoth that is Diablo 3 made Torchlight 2‘s prospects look grim. Can the pseudo-indie take on the genre beat the franchise that birthed it? Well, as of today you can download the game and find out for yourself.
Torchlight 2 is just available on Windows PCs right now, but Mac, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 versions are all in the works. For the moment, you can get the game from one of two places: The official store hosted by publisher Perfect World, or the popular Steam game distribution service.
The Torchlight 2 website is a little hosed at the time of this writing, but Steam is working beautifully, and the official website and download should clear up within a couple of hours. Anticipation for this game has been high so a lot of people are trying to download it.
Like other action RPGs, Torchlight 2 has you picking from a number of heroic character classes and hacking and slashing your way through hordes of enemies with powerful spells and abilities in search of epic loot to make your character even more awesome. 2012 seems to be the year of the Diablo-like action RPG with Torchlight 2, Diablo 3, and the just-launched first-person shooter hybrid Borderlands 2 headlining.
Fun fact: In-the-know fans call games in the genre “Roguelikes” because the genre actually began with a primitive, text-based game called Rogue. Instead of a colorful 3D character model, you controlled a simple ASCII character. Anyway, the Torchlight 2 download links are below. The game costs $19.99.
