You can buy Prometheus in HD weeks early on Google Play today, and 600 more TV episodes and films from 20th Century Fox have hit Google’s streaming and downloadable video roster as well. Much of the content is also available on YouTube.
The new deal with Fox was announced on Google’s blog today. Other items included in the package are Family Guy, Modern Family, Glee, and the X-Men movies. Prometheus won’t hit other storefronts digital or otherwise until October 11, and while it’s out today, much of the rest of Fox’s additional content for Google Play and YouTube will roll out gradually in the coming weeks.
The Prometheus deal is part of a new initiative at Fox to offer early access digital copies to some major theatrical releases through special partners. It’s a smart move.
Google Play is Google’s web-based answer to iTunes for Windows PCs and Android smartphones and tablets, Google has gradually been building the library behind Google Play since the service launched back in March. In April, both Google Play and YouTube’s rental service got hundreds of new films from another major studio, MGM.
Update: iTunes has also been updated with early purchases of Prometheus in HD, with the standard edition version still pre-order only. This matches Google Play’s early order advantage, though Amazon appears to still be waiting. Thanks for the tip, Gordon!
