Borderlands, one of the breakthrough new gaming franchises of the past several years, is making its debut on mobile devices — specifically iOS gadgets like the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The new game is called Borderlands Legends, and it’s coming on October 31 for $4.99 in the Apple App Store.
The latest non-mobile entry to the series was Borderlands 2, which hit the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC just a couple of months ago. Borderlands Legends appears to be more faithful to the series’ roots (Diablo and the text-based “Rogue-likes” that preceded it) than it is to Borderlands proper.
The new game lets you play as the same four characters you can control in Borderlands 2, but this time you’ll direct them from a top-down, third-person perspective instead of the first-person-shooter approach used in the main series. The core gameplay is the same though; it’s an RPG that will task you with killing tons of enemies, getting tons of loot, and leveling up your characters. The main departure apart from the viewpoint is that you’ll sometimes be able to control more than one of your characters at once.
It’s an interesting decision to do a top-down, randomly-generated action RPG like those that inspired Borderlands‘ first-person shooter take on the genre, but it makes sense; 3D, first-person controls have never worked all that well on the iPhone and iPad’s touch screens. No word on an Android version yet.
