Last night, the 13th season of MythBusters premiered on the Discovery channel, and it was a doozy; Adam and Jamie tested a myth from one of the biggest movies of all time. When James Cameron’s visual and emotional spectacle Titanic hit theaters in 1997, viewers were moved by the death of Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jack — but some viewers weren’t convinced. “Couldn’t Jack have climbed up on that makeshift raft, too?”
Well, the MythBusters tested it and used science to settle it once and for all. If you want to know what the definitive conclusion is, you can either download the whole episode on iTunes or watch some select clips on Discovery.com. The links are below. Grab the whole episode and you’ll be able to see the build team (Tory, Grant, and Carrie) test out a rocket-powered surfboard too — and who doesn’t want to see that?
It’s peculiar that Discovery is offering the full episode on iTunes, but not on its own website. In many cases ad revenues in digital media can match those of over-the-air broadcasts; CBS Interactive’s Jim Lanzone said in an interview that CBS’s advertising performance in the two kinds of media is on par by some metrics. And even leading TV ratings firm Nielsen has finally merged the two in its measurements.
